The teachers are mutants themselves (many are alumni) and provide the students with an environment where they are accepted for who they are and do not have to worry about persecution from others.
The school also serves as a base of operations for Xavier’s X-Men, a team of mutants who help protect humanity from corrupt mutants that use their powers for their own gain. After graduation, students have the option of staying with the team and become instructors at the school.
The general public believes that Xavier’s is simply an exclusive school for gifted children. If the truth were to come out, many would want the school shutdown. "
